MID-ATLANTIC MUSIC VETERAN BILLY COULTER ISSUES SELF-TITLED DEBUT

Produced by Fleetwood Mac, WAMA Notables. Nominated for Best New Artist

After a 20-year journey of personal discovery, Washington, DC area native Billy Coulter delivers a heartfelt album of rock and roll worth waiting for.

All of the 12 songs on the self-titled CD were written by Coulter and produced in part by Steve Thoma (Fleetwood Mac, Glenn Frey) and by five-time Washington Area Music Award (Wammie) winner, Marco Delmar. Coulter’s band created an album of instantly memorable songs that has earned them a nomination for the “Best New Artist” Wammie award.

"Billy Coulter is one of those refreshing artists who manages to sometimes leave you breathless with his depth of expression. There is nothing halfway about Coulter, and he has been a breath of fresh air to work with," said Delmar of their recent collaboration.

In the early 80’s, Coulter’s rock group, The Inserts, gained notoriety as a winner of WUSA-TV’s “Rising Stars of Washington” and performed live on Channel 9. The band recorded several of Coulter’s compositions, including a single, “Living in Suburbia.” When The Inserts broke up shortly thereafter, Coulter gave up writing. He went on to perform in several local bands, including The Diversions and Bomb Squad.

Returning to songwriting didn’t happen overnight. Coulter realized he missed the joy of creating and performing his own music. In 1999, after a series of personal challenges -- that are deftly acknowledged in his collection of songs -- Coulter began to write again. This time with candor and earnestness he didn’t access in his earlier work.

Now backed by players from legendary DC rock stalwarts like Tommy Keene’s band and Cravin’ Dogs, Coulter has built a group that defines the ideal balance of American Roots and British Classic Rock. This band slams out a passionate, organic sound with crunchy guitars and rich vocals, backed by a commanding rhythm section.

"It's been great to hear Billy mature as a writer, and become a true artist in the studio and on the live stage,” noted Thoma.

A show to celebrate the release of "Billy Coulter" on Confluence Records will take place from 7-9 pm Sunday, January 25th at Half Moon BBQ, 8235 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland.
